“Yes, I promise!” she replied immediately, almost without thinking. Now that she had her Angel, she would do all that she could to keep him. “I will do whatever you ask of me.”
A smile soon stretched across her face as she lifted her eyes to Heaven. Her father’s promise was finally fulfilled, and her heart beat rapidly in excitement. “Thank you!” she exclaimed. “Oh, thank you, Angel!”
He exhaled silently. Not so bad. Something to occupy his mind. He’d been going insane, seething below the Opera and puppeteering the brainless owner. Here, at last, was a chance to do something great.
Not that he hadn’t done great things. For god’s sake, he’d built the building upon which they stood. But nothing he’d done had truly been good. If he could keep himself under control, he could guide the beautiful young girl to a great, successful future.
“Wonderful,” he murmured to her. “You will have your first lesson tomorrow night, after rehearsal. Between now and then, you are to drink only water or tea and eat simply and well. Nourishment affects the voice, dear, and that is your first lesson. Will you do that for me, and for yourself?”
“Yes, of course,” she answered. Whatever the Angel asked of her, she was willing to do. “Where will our lesson take place tomorrow?”
