Christine eagerly agreed to the Angel’s arrangements. In her mind, she knew tomorrow could not come soon enough, but she had to be patient. She had waited many years for the Angel to arrive; she could wait one more day for their lessons to begin.
“Is there anything else you need of me, Angel?” she asked joyfully, her eyes still to the Heavens.
His eyes softened as he watched her happy response to his voice. He felt wonderful himself, as though a tiny beam of light had struck him from behind a bank of stormclouds. “No, my dear. Sleep well tonight, and do not allow yourself to be distracted during rehearsals. It will not help you to displease your directors.”
Rehearsal; she had almost forgotten about the rehearsal going on below her. Christine knew that if she didn’t leave now, her absence would be noticed and Madame Giry would certainly be furious.
“Thank you, Angel! I shall be prepared for our lesson tomorrow. You have my word!” Christine bowed her head in gratitude and, with one final smile, made her way back into the opera house. She seemed to fly down the stairs and back to rehearsal; her mind and her heart still racing from the Heavenly encounter that had just transpired. And when her fellow dancers approached her, asking where she had been or why she suddenly seemed so happy, she simply smiled and said “Someone has kept their promise to me.”
